COACHING TOOL: Field Lines

Restraining Lines

Two lines on the field typically on the thirty yard lines of the football field. The restraining lines play an important role during the draw. During the draw the attack and defense must stay behind the restraining lines (closer to the goal) until possession has been called by the referees. At all other times during the game a team must keep four players plus a goalie behind the opposite 30 to avoid being offside.

Crease

The circle surrounding the goal, this is a space for the goalie only. Defense and offensive players are unable to go inside the crease with the exception of deputy plays for the defenders.

Deputy: A defender who can enter the goal circle in the absence of the goalie when her team has the ball. Some areas have decided Deputies are no longer legal, please check your rules book. If this is allowed, it's a great technique for young goalies to gain confidence!

Draw Circle

The draw circle plays a part in the game to start each playing period and after every goal. The draw circle is located in the middle of the field.

8 Meter Arc

The 8 meter arc is located on both ends of the field and serves as the critical scoring area or CSA. Fouls that occur in the CSA result in 8 meter shots on the hash marks on the 8 meter.

12 Meter Arc

The 12 meter is used for the administration of minor fouls and is located on both ends of the field like the 8 meter.
