DRILL: Ground Ball Recovery

NOT YOUR TYPICAL GROUND BALL DRILL - THIS FOCUSES ON BIGGER SITUATIONS LIKE TRANSITION AND FAST BREAKS.

This Drill Highlights:

  • Transition

  • Fast Breaks

  • Uneven Numbers

DESCRIPTION:

The drill starts when Coach rolls a ground ball to A1.  A1 picks up the ground ball and runs to attack the goal with the rest of her team.  When D1 realizes the ground abll is going to her marked girl (A1) she needs to sprint back and touch the cone where A1 was standing while the rest of the defenders drop to defense to slow down the fast break while D1 recovers.

The drill is stopped when attack scores or when the defense successfully clears the ball back to midfield.  All players will return where they started and the drill is repeated.

MODIFY THE DRILL:

-Add a 1v1 or a 2v2 down low waiting for the players to break down for the fast break.  This will create more opportunity and more learning moments.

-Keep more players matched up low and less players in the recover part.

-Separate A1 and D1’s lines to force the defense to have a longer recovery.

EQUIPMENT:

Cones, Full Field, Full Team, Whistle, Goalie

HIGHLIGHTED SKILLS:

Transition, Defending the fast break, Attack slow break and fast break options, Man up/down situations.

KEY COACHING POINTS:
