Inside the Minds of Coaches: Insights from a Year of Conversations

After one year of recording the Coaches Are People Too podcast, Tyra and Avery have interviewed 27 incredible coaches from a wide range of sports. From lacrosse to tennis, soccer, basketball, and more, these conversations have opened our eyes to the rich diversity within the coaching profession.

A Diversity of Coaching Styles

One of the most surprising takeaways from these conversations is how differently coaches approach their role. Some are deeply hands-on, guiding their athletes through every step, while others take a step back, letting players find their own way.

"We've met first-time head coaches finding their voice and seasoned veterans still making an impact—there is no one way to coach."

This diversity is what gives coaching its depth and flexibility. Whether coaches are new or experienced, their methods vary, but every approach brings something valuable to their teams.

Common Ground:

Love for the Game and Community

Despite the variety of coaching styles, every conversation revealed core values that unite coaches. We all share a deep love for our teams, an unwavering passion for people, and a strong belief in authenticity.

"While winning matters, it’s the relationships, connections, and bonds that keep coaches motivated and fulfilled."

At the heart of it all, they’ve found that coaching is about more than tactics and strategies. It’s about building community, mentoring athletes, and creating meaningful connections that last well beyond the game.

Coaching as a Two-Way Street

Through these conversations, Tyra and Avery have realized that coaching is a journey of personal growth as much as it is about teaching. While we guide and support our athletes, they teach us just as much.

"Coaching is a two-way street—our players teach us leadership, resilience, and empathy."

This past year has been a transformative experience for both of Tyra and Avery. The stories of perseverance, passion, and purpose from other coaches have inspired them and reminded them of the profound impact that coaches can have on athletes' lives.

Looking Ahead

As Tyra and Avery continue our podcast journey, they’re excited for more conversations and more growth.

"Coaching is about relationships, mentorship, and showing up as your authentic self."
