Survey and Go

A drill that teaches topside attackers to challenge the defense and then survey the 8m for cutters while playing with their heads up.

Description of Drill: An attacker starts with a ball, and drives to the cone at the elbow.  A defender then starts to defend - vary the contact you allow (50-100%). Once the attacker meets the defender she will drop back to the next cone while looking for a coach holding a number up and then call out the number. When she reaches the area of the cone, she then dodges to the next cone. Repeat this until she attacks the final cone, the defense then becomes 100% and it’s a 1v1 to cage.

Equipment Needed: Cage, cones, and balls.

Skills Emphasized: Offense, driving to the cage, dropping back out of pressure while seeing the field for feeds inside the 8m.

Coaching Points of Emphasis: Shoulder-shoulder-ball concept, head up at all times, triple threat. This drill can be run with and without defense. Cones can be adjusted for different depths of the angles. Always finish with an opportunity to shoot whether it be the dodger or the person who catches a feed. If the dodger goes to the cage, require a 1 dodge and go rule. Turn your coach into an attacker force your dodger to call the names of who is asking for the ball and allow live feeds.  Coach and players can move about the 8m so the dodger has to actively survey for feeds. As the level of play increases, add more variables.
