3v5 Hedging
1v1’s for winners by Emily Boissonneault.
This Drill Highlights:
High force angles
How to hedge with good position to ensure a foul free crash
Seeing the backside slide from the crease
Description:
5 defenders organize into a house formation around the 8m. 3 attackers hold high, above the elbows. Attackers are told to have a drive first mentality, off ball attackers must stay above the elbows.
Players play a true 3v3 high focused on communicating where to force the ball, hedge and crash under the ball. The crease defenders hold space ready to slide or crash on cutters that are left due to a second slide. The crease defenders are there to support and BUILD CONFIDENCE in the first and second slide.
Variations:
You can move this drill to any spot on the field, for example, a 2v2 (2v4) at X.
Equipment:
Balls
Highlighted Skills:
Hedging, communication, slides, & crash
Key Coaching Points:
Hedgers should ALWAYS keep the ball and their girl ahead of them. I use the term “get deeper in the 8” to see both
If a cutter goes through the 8m the defender always goes with
Crash should always be under the ball NEVER on the attacker’s hip/side (that’s how we foul).
