Replace your goalie’s low saves with a split save.

This Drill Highlights:

  • Regular Split Save

  • Butterfly Split Save

Description:

Mira goes over two different split saves with us and how to teach them: The regular split save and the Butterfly split save.

Regular Split Save: Goalie sets in the center of the cage. Coach rolls ball softly to a low corner. The goalie works on splitting with her chest over the ball, foot toward the pipe and stick covering the ball. Do this stick side and off-stick.

Butterfly Split Save: Goalie sets in the center of the cage. Coach rolls ball softly to the center. The goalie works on “splitting” with her knees straight down to the center. She brings her stick down and absorbs the ball in the center, too.

Equipment:

Soft balls or regular lacrosse balls, Cage.

Highlighted Skills:

Flexibility, ball tracking, low saves.

Key Coaching Points:

  • Repetition, repetition, repetition.

  • Make sure the goalie has spatial awareness when making split saves.

  • Strong Flexible legs

  • Focus on full body extension and the large lunge/split across the cage.
